Tandem Diabetes Launches Next-Gen Automated Insulin Delivery Algorithm in U.S.

Tandem Diabetes Care has launched Control-IQ+, the latest generation of its advanced hybrid closed-loop algorithm for diabetes patients, in the U.S.

Control-IQ+ is compatible with both the company’s t:slim X2 insulin pump and Mobi system and available for type 1 diabetes patients two years and older, as well as adults with type 2 diabetes. The new algorithm earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for type 2 diabetes patients last month.

Pumps pre-loaded with the new software are now shipping and all eligible Tandem customers can access the new features via remote software update.

The new algorithm includes expanded weight (20-440 lbs.) and total daily insulin (5-200 units) parameters. It also has enhanced, extended bolus up to eight hours with Control-IQ+ turned on to better manage meals with delayed glucose rise or prolonged eating.

New Temp Basal Rate adjustments are allowed when Control-IQ+ is active to address short-term glucose needs like exercise, stress, or illness. In addition to adjusting insulin every five minutes based on predicted glucose values, an AutoBolus feature calculates and delivers a correction bolus to help with missed meal boluses.

According to Tandem Diabetes, Control IQ+ is the only automated insulin delivery (AID) algorithm that lets users program extended boluses of up to eight hours while automation is active.

Earlier this year, the company also signed a multi-year collaboration agreement with the University of Virginia Center for Diabetes Technology (UVA) to advance research and development efforts on fully automated closed-loop insulin delivery systems.
